The mooring places in front of the town of Krk Croatia on the homonymous island are one of the safest and most beautiful anchoring positions on the Kvarner Islands. The Krk Island is connected to the mainland by 1430 m long Krk Bridge for over thirty years, which means that the island is easily accessible to all visitors. Krk Croatia is an island with a growing number of inhabitants as well as the place of wealth and prosperity. From the ancient times, Krk is called the Golden Island, because it’s enabled its inhabitants a well – being thanks to the islands abundant and various autochthonous products.
The large and widespread olive groves, vineyards, thousands of free sheep which graze, and on the other hand many hotels and resorts that stretch around the island, as well as modern houses and villas for rent, excellent roads connecting all parts of the island, dozens of kilometres of bike trails, as well as hundreds of kilometres of hiking trails make Krk an ideal destination at any time of the year.
Located in the very centre of Kvarner, Krk is known as one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the country. The mild Mediterranean climate, favourable geographical location and wealth of natural beauty and historical - cultural sites, certainly deserve the title of the ‘golden island’. Thanks to its cultural heritage, Krk is also known as ‘the cradle of Croatian culture’, to the extent that the island at the beginning of the twentieth century was nicknamed the ‘sixth continent’.
It is said that ‘all roads lead to Krk’ and this fact holds true thanks to the excellent traffic connections by land over the Krk Bridge, by ships to the numerous harbours and also many marinas on the island. There is also excellently maintained connection of Krk by ferries with the other islands, and also the nearness of the Rijeka Airport which is located near the town of Omišalj.
Krk in Croatia is distanced from the City of Rijeka by only 30 kilometres. This island is a result of influences of many differences – the one that had happened in the distanced past and the present one’s, of the modern era and the Antic times, the various myths and the legends. Discover Krk with words and pictures, through the myths and realities on the first occasion, if you have not already done it so far!
In addition to its beautiful natural landscapes, Krk is abundant in historical heritage. The prehistoric traces have been found all over the island (Biserujka Cave, which is open to visitors), and in the town of Krk, which has also been known as the Splendissima Civitas Curictarum (The grand town of Krk) in Roman times. The Krk Island is also the cradle of Croatian literacy, as it was evidenced by the discovery of the Baška tablet in 1851 that was found in the church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor, near Baška.
The inscription written on the Glagolitic alphabet was found on the stone slab that originates from the year 1100. It is a documented proof of donation of land to the monastery in Jurandvor. In this very rich heritage the name of the Croatian King Zvonimir was also mentioned and today such discovery is known as the Baška tablet. The original is kept and preserved in the foyer of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb, and a copy can be seen in Jurandvor.
Baška Valley also has a Glagolitic Path with 34 stone sculptures: four of them have inscribed large Glagolitic letters, and the rest were created in the sculpture workshops in Baška. Krk has also a symbolic link with the number seven.
During the 7th century Krk was settled by the Croatian tribes and it was successfully defended against pirates seven times; the seventh prince of Frankopan was the Duke of Krk, and also the seven castles on the island today serve as the basis for the seven local governmental units on the island.
The rich local heritage treasures are kept in churches, but also are reflected in the narrow streets of the old towns of Krk, Omišalj, Dobrinj, Vrbnik, Baška and Punta Dubašnica. In the Punat Gulf, there is the Košljun Islet with its famous Franciscan monastery (known for his extensive library, ethnographic collection and a number of interesting exhibits that represent the daily life of farmers and fishermen from the Krk Island) and also the church assets, whose main altar has a preserved polyptych by Girolamo da Santa Croce.
The traditional way of life of islanders is closely linked to the sea (fishing, seafood, and shipbuilding), agriculture and livestock, especially sheep breeding. And that is, in addition to other activities of later date has remained a tradition on the island. Today, there are seven administrative units:
The City of Krk
Of all the towns on the island, City Krk in Croatia is considered to be the centre of the island. Krk is one of the oldest urban centres in Croatia. The former Roman settlement still mirrors parts of the city walls and gates, as well as Romanesque cathedral and Frankopan Castle, dated from 12th century. One of the main attractions of the city is its cathedral, which forms a complex with the church (basilica) of St. Quirinus.
The newer parts of town are spread over the surrounding hills, the bay, and included the port, beaches, campsites and hotels. The city is the administrative, business and educational centre of the island, while as far as tourism is concerned, Krk is very attractive and picturesque place, especially in the summer. It provides a sense of elegance and a rich historical heritage on which the new and diverse tourism offer is based.
Omisalj Croatia is one of the oldest cities on the island. The city itself is built on a cliff about 80 meters above the sea with panoramic views of the bay. Omišalj has preserved its medieval urban structure and the charming old town that particularly stands out with the old residential houses that are densely packed next to each other.
In addition to the rich cultural and historical heritage, there are hotels, business facilities, private accommodation facilities, as well as restaurants and taverns that have a rich gastronomic offer.
Malinska Croatia is a tourist centre, situated on the northwest coast of the island, 13 km north of the town of Krk. Malinska has been developing as a port at the beginning of the 19th century, when the export of wood was transferred from Port to the cove of Malinska, because of the existing better road connection, for the purpose of wood transport from the island's interior.
Because of the tameness of the landscape and numerous smaller settlements, there is a specificity of wooded and endless coastline of Malinska Riviera that inhabits people who, in recent times, lives from tourism.
Today state of the tourism in Malinska marks a continuation of the tradition that dates back to the early 20th century, and offers accommodation in hotels, villas with swimming pools and a large selection of accommodation in private apartments in Malinska. What will draw you to Malinska is most likely, indented and very tame coast, beautiful beaches, peace and relaxation in top quality apartments, as well as affordable stay in family hotels, which are a kind of a trademark of Malinska.
Punat Croatia is a small town located in the southern part of the island. The early development of the city has started during the 19th century. Punat is a small tourist town that primarily offers an escape from the hustle, stress and city noise. It is famous for its olives, which is why today almost every family in Punat has its own olive grove from which it makes high-quality olive oil.
Punat is one of the largest nautical centres in Croatia and here the sailors will fell especially welcome. In Punat is located the largest and oldest marina on the Adriatic which can accommodate about 1200 vessels. Right next to the marina Punat, 50 meters from the sea, stood hotel Kanajt. It is an ideal meeting place for sailors, sea fans and fans of active holidays. In addition, Punat will also gladly accept any other guests in their hotels, campsites, apartments and rooms in private houses.
In its offer are included one - day trips to the nearby islands, scuba diving, walking or hiking on trails in the hinterland. Punat is ideal for aquatic sports, such as surfing and water skiing, activities that will delight even the most demanding guests.
Baska Croatia is situated on the south-eastern part of the island and is the most famous tourist resort on the island. Situated in a quiet valley, in the bay surrounded by vineyards, olive-groves, picturesque background of the karst Velebit Mountain and the Prvić Islet; for all of these elements seems to protect this unique 1800 m long pebble beach from all sides; justly said that it is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic.
As in other places on the island, for the Baška are typical narrow streets, lined with narrow lines of houses, especially in the old part of the town. Besides the beautiful beach, Baška is well - known for its typical architecture and numerous cultural and historical monuments, for the most famous of all is the old Croatian monument Baška tablet.
Vrbnik Croatia is a typical old Mediterranean city, situated at 48 meters high cliff. Its name was first mentioned in the 12th century. Vrbnik is known as the spiritual centre with many churches within the old city walls. The place is characterized by narrow streets, so it’s no wonder that the narrowest street in the world is located right in Vrbnik.
You do not have to know anything about the Croatian history and the history of the Krk Island, but as soon as you come to Vrbnik, you will realize that the beauty is revealed here at every step. You will feel the tradition, the islander’s hard way of life, the connection between man and nature, because life depends on the grapevine that feeds the city.
This particular grape variety arrived to Krk at the end of the 19th century, and it came to the Vrbnik Valley in a period between the two world wars. The name of the wine, Žlahtina comes from the adjective ‘zlahten’, what in Slavic means ‘noble’. The wine colour varies from light yellow to the straw yellow colour, with delicate fragrance and special flavour. Žlahtina goes best with sheep cheese, all kinds of fish and seafood.
With an extremely rich cultural and historical heritage and the library, specific features include well-preserved local architecture monuments. Vrbnik can offer its visitors accommodation in private rooms and apartments of the family houses.
Dobrinj is a cultural and historical centre of the municipality of the same name, and it consists of many picturesque villages in the northeast of the island, and is one of the island's best kept oases, with its rich cultural - historical sites.
Untouched nature and pleasant climate provides an ideal holiday for the body and soul. This small town is proud of its museums that encompassed the sacral, ethnographic and fossil collections. Several galleries exhibit the works of renowned local and international artists.
